TIME TO BUILD
How long does it take to build Colosseum?
A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

Intermediate
≈ 21 hSuggested range17 h – 28 hExperienced
≈ 15 hSuggested range13 h – 20 hBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
A large architectural model with extensive repetition. Familiar builders may speed through repeated modules; finding pieces and checking alignment can take longer for someone starting out.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Inside the set
An idea years in the making
Rok Žgalin Kobe had been experimenting with the Colosseum at different scales since 2012. The eventual prototype also passed through Mike Psiaki’s hands before returning to Rok for the final design.
LEGO sourceRoller skates among the columns
The scrolls on the column capitals use an unexpected element: upside-down LEGO roller skates. At its November 2020 launch, the 9,036-piece model had the highest piece count of any LEGO set.

A name borrowed from a statue
Originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum takes its later name from the Colossus of Nero, a huge statue that stood nearby, rather than simply from the building’s size.
Italia.it · Italian national tourism portalBefore the arena, there was a lake
The amphitheatre was built on the site of an artificial lake in Nero’s Domus Aurea. Construction began under Vespasian; Titus inaugurated it in AD 80 with a hundred days of games.

A soundtrack for your build
Colosseum · Selected for the building rhythm
For a project spread over several sessions we choose a relaxed ambient backdrop rather than matching the set’s name. The piano alternative adds a more distinct melodic presence.

ANOTHER MOOD
In A Time Lapse (Reimagined)
Ludovico Einaudi
Piano · melodic and intimateA build to spread over several sessions: choose the more understated option when you want the instructions to take centre stage. The music does not set your pace.
