Based on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: A yellow dump truck. The bed is shown raised in the photo. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Checked: 26 October 2026 · Method v1.0 · Limited reports; not a statistical average.

A 1956 experiment

On 26 April 1956 the Ideal X was used to test standardised containers at Port Newark.

Ideal X sailed from Port Newark’s Berth 24 to Houston carrying 58 containers. The Port Authority records one container loaded every seven minutes and loading completed in under eight hours. Gateway City carried over three times as many the next year.

From ship to truck

The system used loads stacked aboard ship and transferable to compatible truck chassis, linking the two modes of transport.

The Port Authority notes that McLean did not invent metal cargo boxes. His breakthrough concerned handling freight, reducing repeated movement of individual packages. Containerisation reshaped ships, trucks, rail cars and cranes together: the vessel was only one part of a connected transport system.

SET THE MOOD

A soundtrack for your build

· Selected for the subject and atmosphere

Electronic pulses and open melodies provide movement without a constant action-film crescendo. They accompany landscapes and travelling vehicles through a sense of exploration.
