This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: A Battle of the Five Armies scene. A small dark ballista accompanies the characters. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Checked: 26 October 2026 · Method v1.0 · Limited reports; not a statistical average.

A sentence on an exam paper

Tolkien recalled writing The Hobbit’s first sentence on a blank page while marking examinations. Bilbo’s home began before the complete novel.

Rateliff places the initial idea during exam marking in summer 1930. Inventing “hobbit” led Tolkien to explore what it meant. Early names differed from their familiar final uses. The story developed through returns and revisions rather than emerging as a finished manuscript at once.

A ten-year-old reader

Publisher Stanley Unwin asked his ten-year-old son Rayner to read the manuscript. His enthusiasm helped lead to its publication on 21 September 1937.

Ten-year-old Rayner Unwin reported on the manuscript from a child’s perspective, helping secure publication in 1937. Tolkien had already read it to his children and lent it to friends. Real readers’ responses joined revision and illustration work in the book’s path to publication.
