How we estimate times · sources and method

Wings, tyres and decorations require precision in a small space. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

03

Formula 2 beneath the skin

The film cars used modified Formula 2 chassis with bodywork designed by Mercedes Applied Science.

For F1 The Movie, Mercedes Applied Science designed F1-style bodywork for a stretched, widened Formula 2 chassis. The first car used a genuine Mecachrome F2 engine, giving the fictional APXGP team actual racing performance rather than merely a convincing stationary prop.

04

An electric version too

Production prepared a 400-volt electric chassis to make pit-lane filming easier.

Production also created a 400-volt electric APXGP for pit-lane filming. Graham Kelly explained that combustion racing cars cannot sit indefinitely while crews prepare shots. Cinema therefore required different engineering beneath similar bodywork, adapting each vehicle to the demands of its scene.
