TIME TO BUILD

A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

Intermediate
≈ 35 minSuggested range21 min – 56 minExperienced
≈ 24 minSuggested range14 min – 39 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Editorial assessment of the first illustrated arrangement: A T. rex towers over a riverside scene with a hut, boat and small vehicle. The large T. rex contrasts with the smaller scenery and vehicle builds. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks and subsequent play are excluded. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Two fingers, not three
Tyrannosaurus had just two fingers on each hand. Its short-arm anatomy distinguishes it from many other carnivorous dinosaurs.

In 1915, AMNH displayed specimen 5027 with three fingers on each hand. Later discoveries established that T. rex had two, and the mount was corrected. Museum reconstructions can change when new evidence improves our understanding.
A discovery in 1902
In 1902, Barnum Brown found the first Tyrannosaurus rex fossil discovered for the American Museum of Natural History. The skeletons on display today have a long research history behind them.

Mark Norell distinguishes finding a fossil from recognising it. Cope collected remains in the 1870s without identifying them as T. rex. Brown found the museum’s first specimen in 1902, then specimen 5027 at Hell Creek in 1909.

A lively alternative for fitting pieces and repeated steps. This choice follows the building rhythm rather than the subject’s story, without setting a pace you need to keep.
