How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: Blue and Beta accompany a pickup and a motorcycle. The scene is rich in characters, while assembly centres on the small red vehicle and accessories. The red and white vehicle has a rear bed for the scene's cargo. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

03

Smaller than the films

Real Velociraptor was comparable in size to a large turkey, unlike its cinematic image.

The museum compares Velociraptor with a turkey and the larger film animals with its relative Deinonychus. Its sickle claw was held above the ground while walking. Cinematic toe-tapping is not a behaviour demonstrated by fossil tracks, separating a memorable scene from scientific evidence.

04

Feathers without flight

It had feathers but lacked the structure needed for flight.

Quill attachments identified in 2007 show long feathers on a Velociraptor’s forelimb. Feathers do not establish flight: the Natural History Museum distinguishes covering from flight capability. Insulation and display are possible functions, illustrating the difference between fossil evidence and behavioural hypotheses.
