Only mature Mandrakes work in the draught curing Petrification. Growth therefore matters to the plot as well as the comedy of teenage plants throwing parties. Waiting for the right stage links greenhouse work with helping the cursed characters.
Why earmuffs are needed
Mandrake cries become fatal at maturity, which is why repotting lessons require ear protection.

The fictional Mandrake initially resembles a crying baby, but its mature cry is fatal. Classroom earmuffs respond to that magical property. Ordinary gardening becomes a fantastic encounter as the uprooted plant behaves like a creature rather than an inert root.
