A flower changes the hero

The Fire Flower already appears in 1985’s Super Mario Bros., transforming Mario into his fire-powered form.

The Fire Flower enables fire attacks, distinct from the Super Mushroom’s growth and the Super Star’s invincibility. Nintendo’s history separates items and resulting forms. These are not merely differently coloured prizes: each power-up changes the character’s capabilities within a recognisable object vocabulary.

Her name in the English manual

The original English manual uses Princess Toadstool for the princess now known as Peach.

The original English manual calls the princess Toadstool and says she can break the Koopas’ spell on the Mushroom People. Freeing her can restore them, giving the rescue a collective consequence beyond reaching a castle at the end of the route.
