TIME TO BUILD
How long does it take to build Interstellar Spaceship?
A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

Intermediate
≈ 45 minSuggested range15 min – 1 h 15 minExperienced
≈ 30 minSuggested range15 min – 45 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
A compact build with relatively few pieces, but the thruster mechanism needs correctly oriented parts. The drone is included. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

The review suggests around half an hour, possibly a little longer. The three experience-level times remain our own editorial assessment.

Propelled by ions
Dawn used electricity to accelerate xenon ions through space. Xenon was chosen partly because it is inert, can be stored compactly and has relatively heavy atoms.
Dawn electrically accelerated xenon ions. NASA selected the gas for chemical inertness, compact storage and relatively heavy atoms. Electrical energy expelled particles at high speed in a system designed for prolonged space operation, differing from chemical rocket engines.
A little thrust for a long time
The ion system produced low thrust but used little propellant. At full power it consumed about 3.25 milligrams of xenon per second, allowing acceleration to continue for long periods.

At maximum thrust Dawn used about 3.25 milligrams of xenon per second. Small thrust accumulated over thousands of operating days rather than launch-stage minutes. Sustained gentle acceleration could therefore produce large velocity changes without the dramatic initial push associated with a conventional rocket.
