This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: A break-in with a bulldozer, bank and police vehicles. A red bulldozer contrasts with white and blue vehicles. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Checked: 26 October 2026 · Method v1.0 · Limited reports; not a statistical average.

Tracks for soft ground

In 1904, Benjamin Holt tested a tracked tractor, replacing wheels to tackle ground where heavy vehicles sank. An agricultural solution helped shape earthmoving machinery.

Holt’s problem was practical: a heavy tractor needed to work on ground where wheels struggled. The 1904 experiment belongs to the agricultural history of tracks, before Caterpillar was formed in 1925. Modern construction machinery inherited a solution developed over time, rather than inventing it in one model.

Yellow came later

Caterpillar was formed by the merger of Holt and C. L. Best in 1925. Early machines were grey with red details; the characteristic Hi-Way Yellow was adopted in 1931.

Hi-Way Yellow with black trim replaced the earlier grey-and-red scheme in 1931. In 1979, Caterpillar Yellow replaced that first yellow shade. The company’s archive distinguishes these stages, which helps explain why historic photographs and models from different periods do not all share exactly the same livery.

SET THE MOOD

A soundtrack for your build

· Selected for the building rhythm

A lively alternative for fitting pieces and repeated steps. This choice follows the building rhythm rather than the subject’s story, without setting a pace you need to keep.
