How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment of the first illustrated arrangement: A car, trailer and small enclosure accompany a horse and foal in a Friends set. Timing includes vehicles and the illustrated enclosure; imagined rides and stories are excluded. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks and subsequent play are excluded. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Checked: 26 October 2026 · Method v1.0 · Limited reports; not a statistical average.

03

One toe

Modern horses stand on one toe per foot, while several fossil forms retained three.

Modern horses have one toe per limb, but some relatively late relatives, including Neohipparion, retained three. Change did not occur identically along every branch. Today’s hoof represents one outcome within a more varied evolutionary history, rather than a universal step taken simultaneously.

04

A tree, not a ladder

Horse evolution branches rather than forming a simple linear sequence of ever-larger animals.

AMNH now presents a branching history alongside its older linear horse display. Some later forms, such as Calippus, were smaller than earlier ones. Evolution was not an inevitable march towards larger bodies: different lineages developed different combinations of traits over time.

SET THE MOOD

A soundtrack for your build

· Selected for the subject and atmosphere

Voices and acoustic instruments suggest a sociable, lived-in scene. This follows the pleasure of inhabiting an environment rather than assigning music automatically by geography.
