TIME TO BUILD

How long does it take to build NASA Mars Rover Perseverance?

Individual build

A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

Editorial model estimate · no verified measured building time

Beginner

≈ 7 hSuggested range4 h 30 min – 10 h 15 min

Intermediate

≈ 5 hSuggested range3 h 15 min – 7 h 15 min

Experienced

≈ 3 h 30 minSuggested range2 h 15 min – 5 h 15 min

Based on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Suspension geometry, arm and steering need checks during building. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Dimensioni: questo set da costruzione LEGO® Technic misura 23 cm di altezza, 32 cm di lunghezza e 23 cm di larghezza

Approximate assembled-model measurements, not packaging dimensions. Allow extra room for handling, moving parts and the display stand. The comparison uses the measured model’s overall footprint, allows a 90° rotation and does not assess stability or shelf load. Source LEGO ↗ · 2026-10-29

The first flight on another planet

Ingenuity made the first powered, controlled flight on Mars on 19 April 2021.

Ingenuity made the first powered, controlled flight on another planet on 19 April 2021. Carried beneath Perseverance as a technology demonstration, it tested an aerial perspective distinct from the rover’s surface science mission.

04

A challenging atmosphere

Surface pressure on Mars is about one per cent of Earth’s. Rotors must work with very few air molecules.

Mars’s surface pressure is about one percent of Earth’s, leaving little air for rotor interaction. Ingenuity also needed autonomous flight because distance prevented real-time joystick control from Earth. Aerodynamics and guidance were linked challenges, beyond simply building a lighter version of an ordinary helicopter.
