How we estimate times · sources and method

Three movement systems, axles, gears and cladding need smooth-operation checks. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

03

A Russian beginning

Early ancestors of today’s roller coasters included ice slides built in Russia in the seventeenth century. Wooden structures and frozen slopes offered thrills long before trains on rails.

The American Physical Society traces early roots to seventeenth-century Russian wooden ice slides near St Petersburg, followed by wheeled rides developed in France. The Italian name preserves that history even though materials and running systems changed long before modern steel coasters.

From mines to amusement parks

LaMarcus Thompson drew inspiration from a mining railway that had become a tourist attraction. In 1884, he completed his Switchback Railway at Coney Island, helping roller coasters gain popularity in the United States.

Thompson experienced the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, a former coal route turned tourist attraction, before completing his Coney Island ride in 1884. Industrial transport and entertainment became connected when movement along a slope was reinterpreted as a ride chosen for pleasure.
