Intermediate
≈ 1 h 15 minSuggested range45 min – 2 hExperienced
≈ 45 minSuggested range30 min – 1 h 30 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Editorial assessment: A colourful car and stage for Andrea's performance. A microphone and two speakers frame the platform. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

A 1720 original
The Met holds Bartolomeo Cristofori’s oldest surviving piano, dated 1720.
Three Cristofori pianos survive: the Met’s 1720 example and instruments in Rome and Leipzig. The New York case resembles a harpsichord, but the hammer action lets strings vibrate after a strike while preventing unwanted rebounds. Familiar appearance concealed significant mechanical innovation.
Fifty-four keys
The museum instrument has 54 keys versus many modern pianos’ 88, with a markedly different sound.
The Met contrasts Cristofori’s range with a modern piano’s 88 keys. Thinner strings and harder hammers also give a more harpsichord-like timbre. Touch-controlled gradations of soft and loud mattered more than matching a modern grand’s volume: expressive control was central to the invention.
