≈ 1 h 15 minSuggested range45 min – 2 h 15 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Editorial assessment: Ariel's royal celebration boat. Pink flags decorate the upper structure. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Rediscovered drawings
For the 1989 Little Mermaid, artists studied drawings Kay Nielsen had made for a Disney project in the 1930s.
Disney had considered the fairy tale in the late 1930s. Nielsen’s archived sketches later inspired the 1989 artists and earned him a visual-development credit. An abandoned project could therefore contribute ideas decades later, making the archive a working resource rather than merely a store of past material.
A fairytale and two Oscars
Inspired by Andersen, the film won Oscars for its score and the song Under the Sea.

Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wrote the songs. D23 also highlights effects work across nearly eighty per cent of the film, including water, reflections, bubbles and storms. Ariel’s underwater world depended on the environment’s movement as well as its characters.
