How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: Sméagol and Déagol meet beside a little river with a boat, tree and underwater details in a Lord of the Rings scene. The little brown craft completes the composition. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Checked: 26 October 2026 · Method v1.0 · Limited reports; not a statistical average.

Rivendell has a home in New Zealand

Kaitoke Regional Park, near Wellington, was the filming location for Rivendell. Its natural scenery became part of the films’ memorable vision of the Elven refuge.

Kaitoke Regional Park in the Wellington region hosted Rivendell’s filming location. Information panels and elvish references mark the site. The fantasy home drew on real landscape; visiting means recognising a production setting rather than discovering the entire onscreen settlement preserved intact within the park.

The Lord of the Rings appeared in three volumes in 1954–1955, following literary and philological work long preceding its cinematic images.
