≈ 45 minSuggested range15 min – 1 h 15 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Editorial assessment: Two hedgehogs on a picnic date. Red and white flowers decorate the two animals. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Spines as modified hairs
Hedgehog spines are modified hairs made of keratin, the same material found in our fingernails.
Hedgehog quills are modified keratin hairs, sharing material with our nails. Newborn quills are soft beneath fluid-swollen skin that protects the mother during birth. As it shrinks, pale quills emerge, preceding the denser, darker protection associated with adults.
A defensive ball
A hedgehog can curl up to protect its belly, but it cannot shoot its spines.
Curling protects the vulnerable belly behind outward-pointing quills. Hedgehogs cannot shoot them or roll along like some fictional versions. Folklore about intentionally carrying fruit is also misleading: accidentally snagged material does not turn the quills into a food-transport system.
