TIME TO BUILD
How long does it take to build World Map?
A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

≈ 16 hSuggested range10 h 15 min – 23 h 15 minExperienced
≈ 11 hSuggested range7 h – 16 hBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Thousands of repeated tiles and coordinate checks. One configuration without redesigning oceans. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Every flat map distorts
Projecting Earth onto a plane cannot preserve shape, area, distance and direction simultaneously.
A projection transfers Earth’s curved surface onto paper or a screen. USGS explains that no flat map preserves all shapes, areas, distances and directions simultaneously. Reading a world map therefore includes understanding its priorities; a convincing outline does not guarantee every measurement remains proportional.
Purpose changes the map
Navigation and continent-size comparisons can use different projections because they prioritise different information.
Mercator is useful for directions but strongly distorts areas and distances near the poles. Equal-area projections preserve relative surface areas while changing shapes. Navigation and continent-comparison maps may therefore look different because they answer different questions, rather than simply contradicting one another.

A soundtrack for your build
· Selected for the subject and atmosphere
Plantasia’s synthesiser melodies have a light, curious character. We pair them with plants and imaginative shapes: a musical garden rather than a natural sound recording.
OUR PICK
Mother Earth's Plantasia
Mort Garson
Intimate and spaciousA build to spread over several sessions: choose the more understated option when you want the instructions to take centre stage. The music does not set your pace.
