≈ 1 hSuggested range30 min – 1 h 30 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
A compact body, dial and spring function. Covers the main telephone and accessories, not all three alternatives. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Bell received his telephone patent on 7 March 1876; Watson heard the famous successful message three days later. Smithsonian distinguishes formal recognition from a working communication test. Both document and experiment belong to the invention’s history.
Before modern handsets
One 1876 telephone at the Smithsonian is a large box with an iron diaphragm and electromagnets, far removed from a rotary phone.

The November 1876 Boston–Salem demonstration phone includes an iron diaphragm, two electromagnets and a horseshoe permanent magnet. Preserved by Smithsonian, it exposes components less visible in later phones. Voice transmission can be connected directly with membrane movement and magnetic effects through this historical object.
