≈ 20 minSuggested range12 min – 32 minExperienced
≈ 14 minSuggested range8 min – 23 minBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Editorial assessment: Kiki attacks with a coconut. A small light blue animal accompanies the robot. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

A character for Mega Drive
Sonic grew from a project to give Mega Drive a fast game and SEGA a recognisable character.
SEGA wanted a game demonstrating its console and a character representing the company. Its retrospective connects speed-oriented design, cartoon artwork and blue-and-white colours. Sonic’s appearance and movement therefore helped build the manufacturer’s identity as well as an individual adventure.
The 1991 debut
The official twentieth-anniversary timeline dates Sonic the Hedgehog’s debut to 23 June 1991.

SEGA dates the North American debut to 23 June 1991. The game takes its protagonist’s name and makes speed central to his identity. Sequels and other platforms follow, preceding later adaptations that retain his appearance while using different forms of storytelling.
