Shah Jahan commissioned it in his wife’s memory. The main mausoleum was completed in 1648.

Shah Jahan commissioned Mumtaz Mahal’s tomb beside the Yamuna at Agra. It stands at one end of the quartered garden, not centrally. Water, paths, planting and architecture form a composition around the celebrated dome.
The complex kept growing
The mosque, guest house and other buildings followed, with work continuing until 1653.

UNESCO distinguishes the mausoleum’s completion in 1648 from later complex additions finished in 1653. One date does not cover every construction phase. Mosque, guest building and entrance help define the monument, which emerged through successive works rather than appearing at once as a finished isolated form.
