Intermediate
≈ 5 h 30 minSuggested range3 h 30 min – 8 hExperienced
≈ 4 hSuggested range2 h 30 min – 6 hBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Repeated columns, pale façades and sectional symmetry. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

The first residents
John and Abigail Adams became the first official residents in 1800, when the building was still new.
John and Abigail Adams became the White House’s first official residents in 1800. George Washington had selected James Hoban’s design before construction began in 1792. The president shaping its beginnings was therefore not its first occupant, linking the building with successive administrations.
Burned and rebuilt
British troops burned the house in 1814. James Hoban completed its reconstruction in 1817.

British troops burned the White House in 1814 during the War of 1812. Original architect James Hoban completed reconstruction in 1817. Its institutional continuity includes recovery from destruction rather than an untouched origin, with rebuilding restoring the residence to its purpose.
