Based on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Columns, a dome and symmetry require alignment checks. A complete first build by one person. Older sets may use unnumbered bags, so finding pieces can take longer. The broad ranges are editorial assessments, not measured averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

03

A cast-iron dome

The dome is not simply a stone vault: millions of pounds of cast-iron parts are bolted together.

Thomas U. Walter designed the dome built from 1856 to 1866 using over eight million pounds of bolted ironwork. Monumental form conceals an assembly of components. A larger-than-expected Statue of Freedom also required revisions to the proportions of its upper sections.

Not the first dome

Today's dome replaced a lower 1824 structure made of timber covered with copper.

Charles Bulfinch’s first dome, completed in 1824, used copper-covered wood and admitted light through an oculus. Removed in 1856, its salvaged timber fuelled steam engines on the new project. Material from the former structure helped build the one replacing it.
