Based on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Many small pieces, repeated brickwork and long lines to align. A complete first build by one person. Older sets may use unnumbered bags, so finding pieces can take longer. The broad ranges are editorial assessments, not measured averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

The stories, places and inventions behind your build.

03

A Prairie-style statement

Completed in 1910, the house uses horizontal lines and projecting roofs to evoke the prairie landscape.

Completed in 1910, Robie House connects structure, furnishings, ornament and site. Horizontal emphasis runs through projecting roofs, stone bands and even brickwork and mortar. Materials and proportions cooperate in relating the house to its setting, beyond one distinctive roofline alone.

04

Saved twice

The building faced demolition threats in 1941 and 1957, and Wright intervened to defend it.

After family occupation, the house served as classrooms, dormitory, refectory and offices. Demolition threatened in 1941 and 1957, with Wright campaigning both times. Its survival reflects conservation efforts through changing ownership and use, rather than architectural importance automatically guaranteeing continued preservation.

SET THE MOOD

A soundtrack for your build

· Selected for the subject and atmosphere

Ravel’s piano writing offers musical colours and patterns alongside work on the model’s forms. This is an editorial listening choice, not an official association.

OUR PICK

Ravel: The Complete Solo Piano Works and Concertos

Seong-Jin Cho, Boston Symphony Orchestra & Andris Nelsons

Intimate and spacious

A build to spread over several sessions: choose the more understated option when you want the instructions to take centre stage. The music does not set your pace.
