TIME TO BUILD

How long does it take to build Bonsai Tree?

Individual build

A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

Editorial estimate informed by external reports

Beginner

≈ 4 h 30 minSuggested range3 h 15 min – 6 h 15 min

Intermediate

≈ 3 hSuggested range2 h – 4 h 15 min

Experienced

≈ 1 h 45 minSuggested range1 h 15 min – 2 h 30 min

Based on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Some pieces sit loose in the pot rather than representing individual assembly steps. The report covers the green canopy; we allow time for arranging it without counting both variants twice. Experience bands are cautious editorial estimates, not measured user averages.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

How much display space does it need?

Model or component measured by LEGO

Depth / length
≈ 21 cm

These measurements refer to the model or component in the original specification below. Other builds, poses or arrangements may need additional space.

Which model was measured? · original Italian specification
Misura 18 cm di altezza, 21 cm di lunghezza e 20 cm di larghezza.

Approximate assembled-model measurements, not packaging dimensions. Allow extra room for handling, moving parts and the display stand. The comparison uses the measured model’s overall footprint, allows a 90° rotation and does not assess stability or shelf load. Source LEGO ↗ · 2026-10-29

A bonsai cared for since the seventeenth century

The Yamaki pine at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum has been cultivated as a bonsai since 1625. A miniature tree can preserve generations of work rather than remaining forever young.

The Yamaki white pine has been trained as bonsai since 1625, marking four centuries in 2025. Preserved at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, it illustrates how small size need not mean youth: a tree can embody generations of care.

A survivor of Hiroshima

The Yamaki pine survived the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima and was donated to the United States in 1976. Its story is part of the collection’s botanical and cultural significance.

The tree survived Hiroshima in 1945 and was donated to the United States in 1976. The donor’s grandsons revealed its wartime history in 2001. The Peace Tree name links survival with international friendship, understood years after the gift.

A CLOSER LOOK

A small tree, not a dwarf species

A bonsai is not necessarily a genetically dwarf variety. Kew notes that many would grow to their species’ normal size if planted in open ground. Their miniature form depends on cultivation techniques and management of the container.

Pruning and proportion suggest age and character in a small space. That is the model’s visual connection: a few branches must suggest a whole tree, and gaps between leaves matter as much as foliage. Look at the silhouette from several sides before focusing on individual elements.
