TIME TO BUILD
How long does it take to build Ghostbusters™ ECTO-1?
A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.
Editorial estimate informed by external reports
Intermediate
≈ 10 hSuggested range8 h – 14 hExperienced
≈ 7 hSuggested range5 h 30 min – 10 hBased on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.
How we estimate times · sources and method
Mechanisms and varied details add work beyond the piece count. The available report describes a shared build, which isn’t equivalent to building alone, so the suggested ranges are deliberately broad.
Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Check your shelf space
Approximate assembled-model measurements, not packaging dimensions. Allow extra room for handling, moving parts and the display stand. The comparison uses the measured model’s overall footprint, allows a 90° rotation and does not assess stability or shelf load. Source LEGO ↗ · 2026-10-29

Inside the set
From the screen to Mike Psiaki’s desk
Michael “Mike” Psiaki, who also designed the LEGO Aston Martin DB5, based this ECTO-1 on the Ghostbusters: Afterlife car and the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor.
LEGO sourceA roof full of movement
Turning the wheels powers the ghost detector on the roof. The rear gunner seat slides out sideways, just as it does in the film.

A new Ecto-1, a different Cadillac
The 2016 Ghostbusters film uses a 1984 Cadillac for its Ecto-1. The car in the original 1984 film was built on a 1959 Cadillac chassis: the same name, but vehicles from different eras.
The 1984 film’s Ecto-1 used a 1959 Cadillac chassis, while the 2016 version used a 1984 Cadillac. A shared name therefore covers different real vehicles. The later car comes from the very year audiences encountered its famous predecessor on screen.
A working vehicle before the ghosts
The original film’s car was an ambulance/hearse combination conversion. In the story, Ray Stantz repairs and modifies it to carry the team and their ghost-hunting equipment.

The original car combined ambulance and hearse functions on a professional chassis. Ray repairs and modifies it to carry crew, proton packs, traps and instruments. Its fictional identity emerges through equipment and use added to bodywork originally designed for a different professional purpose.

Piano, noise and silence draw attention to sonic texture. The pairing follows unusual surfaces and suspended moods, offering something less predictable than conventional relaxing piano.
