This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: A motorized AT-AT. The front cab carries two cannons. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Checked: 26 October 2026 · Method v1.0 · Limited reports; not a statistical average.

An elephant helped teach it to walk

To animate the AT-ATs in The Empire Strikes Back, Phil Tippett studied a real elephant’s movements. Chalk marks on its joints helped the team observe its steps and recreate their rhythm in stop-motion models.

Phil Tippett filmed an elephant with chalk marks on its joints, but its gait did not convey the walkers’ greater scale. Weeks of tests followed. Keeping three feet grounded while moving the fourth helped the animated machines appear slow, heavy and stable.

The crane story is a myth

Joe Johnston has rejected the story that Oakland’s port cranes inspired the AT-AT. Design references instead included a Syd Mead illustration of a four-legged vehicle.

Joe Johnston instead recalls a Syd Mead illustration of a four-legged transport vehicle in a snowy forest. He developed it into a military machine with a separate head, explicitly rejecting the Oakland-crane story. Visual resemblance is not proof of inspiration.

SET THE MOOD

A soundtrack for your build

· Selected for the subject and atmosphere

Star Wars orchestral writing accompanies vehicles and scenes from the saga. It is one narrative option alongside choices focused on space or building rhythm.

OUR PICK

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

John Williams

Narrative and cinematic

A build to spread over several sessions: choose the more understated option when you want the instructions to take centre stage. The music does not set your pace.
