How we estimate times · sources and method

A rocky building with several rooms and vehicles. Numerous sections, but large System panels speed construction. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Before its penitentiary fame, Alcatraz hosted the US Pacific Coast’s first lighthouse in 1854 and served as a military fortification, later an army prison. Navigation, defence and confinement occupied the same island at different stages, giving the site a history beyond one famous use.

Twenty-nine years as a federal penitentiary

Alcatraz passed to civilian authority in 1934 and closed as a prison in 1963. It reopened to the public ten years later.

Civilian prison authority took over in 1934; the prison closed in 1963. Ten years later Alcatraz reopened publicly within Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Buildings and landscape gained another function, allowing visitors to interpret a place previously organised around confinement.
