How we estimate times · sources and method

Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

An experimental model first

Cockerell tested the principle with a small boat-tethered prototype, illustrating modelling before full-size construction.

Cockerell tested a balsa prototype covered in nylon or silk, powered by a model-aircraft engine and tethered to a rowing boat. Small-scale construction enabled experimentation, allowing him to observe the system before full-size construction beyond reproducing an established vehicle.
