How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: A tree house for a squirrel. A small bowl holds food. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

03

Scattered stores

Squirrels hide food in several places, so one theft does not compromise all their supplies.

Squirrels spread supplies across many caches rather than one central store, reducing potential losses to theft. Some grey squirrels even dig deceptive empty caches when watched. Winter preparation involves memory, smell and competition over food already gathered, not merely burying everything in one place.

Trees from forgotten food

Some hidden seeds are never recovered and can germinate, helping new trees grow.

Some cached seeds remain buried after squirrels recover most winter stores. Under suitable conditions they germinate into trees, creating future food sources. This ecological effect does not require intentional planting: a behaviour serving an individual’s survival can also shape the surrounding woodland over time.

SET THE MOOD

A soundtrack for your build

· Selected for the subject and atmosphere

Small acoustic motifs and a playful character accompany inventive shapes and figures. The aim is curiosity and lightness rather than simply replaying a character’s theme tune.
