This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Boat mechanisms, hull symmetry and numerous white-and-black elements to distinguish. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

A New York debut

Steamboat Willie premiered on 18 November 1928 at New York’s Colony Theater, publicly launching Mickey.

Steamboat Willie opened at the Colony on 18 November 1928 before a Roxy run. MoMA notes that two earlier silent Mickey shorts had failed to interest distributors. The famous debut followed a redesign around coordinated action, effects and music rather than the character’s first experiment.

Sound needed rehearsal

Disney recorded music with seventeen musicians and effects technicians. An initial attempt failed because synchronisation proved difficult.

The first orchestral recording failed to keep time. A bouncing-ball overlay gave musicians a visual tempo reference for the next attempt and was removed from the final film. Apparently spontaneous sound depended on an unseen coordination tool linking music with animated movement.
