How we estimate times · sources and method

Editorial assessment: Green Goblin’s lighthouse rises from a small coastal base with a boat, palm tree and accessories. The low builds assemble separately from the tower. A first build following the instructions, including normal piece finding; an adult may help when needed. Breaks, subsequent play and any alternative models are excluded. For older sets, unnumbered bags or previously mixed pieces may prolong sorting. No verified timed build: indicative values with substantial variation.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

A breakthrough in 1822

Augustin Fresnel completed a thin-panel lens design in 1822 to concentrate light more effectively.

France’s lighthouse commission began investigating improvements in 1811. Fresnel’s 1822 design redirected light horizontally and vertically through thin panels. The challenge was to concentrate otherwise scattered rays, rather than simply to install a brighter lamp.

Less glass, greater efficiency

Earlier lenses were thick, heavy and lost light. The new design improved lighthouse range and efficiency.

Fixed lenses gave steady light; rotating ones produced flashes. Panel count and rotation speed helped define the pattern of light and darkness, known as its characteristic. Mariners could compare it with charts and light lists to identify a particular lighthouse.
