This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

A winged hull, retractable landing gear and several interior spaces. The three central durations are model-specific editorial assessments. Planning ranges extend approximately from 65% to 145%, rounded to quarter-hours; they are not measured experience-level averages or guaranteed limits.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

03

From fictional ships to real airlocks

The ISS Quest airlock has two compartments: one for preparing suits and another for leaving on spacewalks.

NASA describes two compartments: an equipment lock for spacesuit maintenance and a crew lock for the actual exit, joined by a bulkhead and hatch. Comparing fiction with a real station means looking beyond a door to the preparation space that makes it useful.

04

It arrived aboard Atlantis

Quest reached orbit on STS-104 and was installed in July 2001, a real example of modular construction in space.

Atlantis carried Quest on STS-104, launched on 12 July 2001; installation followed on 15 July. NASA also identifies assembly mission 7A. The dates distinguish carrying a component into orbit from installing it in a station assembled through successive missions.
