TIME TO BUILD

How long does it take to build Optimus Prime?

Active building time · one person

A starting point for planning your build. Times for each experience level are editorial estimates, not measurements submitted by HowLongToBuild users.

Editorial estimate informed by external reports

Beginner

≈ 7 hSuggested range5 h – 10 h

Intermediate

≈ 5 hSuggested range4 h – 7 h

Experienced

≈ 3 h 30 minSuggested range2 h 30 min – 5 h

Based on one person building the set for the first time, following the original instructions and using numbered bags where supplied. Includes normal piece-finding and minor adjustments; excludes long breaks, filming, dismantling and modifications. Sources may use different methods. This range is neither a statistical interval nor a limit: your build may take less or more time.

How we estimate times · sources and method

Joints and transformation mechanisms require careful orientation. The source describes roughly four hours but mentions two builders; we don’t automatically treat that as a solo building time.

Sources do not always specify the builder’s experience. The three experience bands are our editorial assessment, based on the complexity of the set and individual accounts where available.

Inside the set

01

Two toy worlds meet

Announced in May 2022, Optimus Prime was the LEGO Group’s first collaboration with Hasbro. Its design draws on the G1 character from the toy line and animated series launched in 1984.

02

Transform without rebuilding

Nineteen points of articulation let the model change from robot to truck and back without being rebuilt. The Matrix of Leadership can be stored in its chest.

Beyond the set

The stories, places and inventions behind your build.

03

Before Transformers, there were other robots

Hasbro acquired rights to Takara’s Japanese Diaclone and Micro Change toy lines. Those transforming toys became the basis for the Transformers brand introduced to the American market in 1984.

04

Marvel helped give the robots a story

The conflict between Autobots and Decepticons was developed with Marvel Comics. The 1984 toys also came with profiles describing abilities and biographies: the character mattered as much as the transformation.
